Studies on the Rest Physiology of Garlic

Abstract
This experiment was performed to clarify the process of test induction and breaking of garlic during the growth and storage. Top shoot growth, bulbing, changes of carbohydrates content and growth of sprout leaf is newly developed clove were investigated. The results obtained were as follows.
1. Cloves differentiated in late April, bulbing initiated in mid May, and shoot growth was retarded markedly with bulbing from early June.
2. Total carbohydrate content was high in order of leaf blade, leaf sheath and clove. Total free sugar a-as highest at leaf sheath and fW ctosan at clove.
3. The earlier harvest time and removal of shoot during the growth, the more past-storage sprouting retarded, and new leases in the clove were differentiated and developed continuously with bulbing advanced, but sprout leaf index(length of clove/length of sprout leaf) showed no differences.
4. Rest breaking in field condition initiated one month earlier than in warehouse, and sprouting was more rapid in moist soil.
5. Upon. above results of sprouting leaf growth in clove, rest of garlic(cv.Seoshin) was induced just after stove differentiation with accumulation of fructosan and seemed to be broken on about August 20 in field.
